| The Key Stages |
| Your child’s time at school is divided into
phases that are known as ‘Foundation Stage’
and ‘Key Stages’. Key stages at the moment
are: |
| Foundation Stage |
The Foundation Stage is a new
stage of education for children
aged from 3 to the end of the
reception year |
| Key Stage 1 |
Key Stage 1 covers Years 1 and
2 (ages 5-7) |
| Key Stage 2 |
Key Stage 2 covers Years 3, 4,
5 and 6 (ages 7-11) |
| Key Stage 3 |
Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8
and 9 (age 11-13). (The first
few years at secondary school) |

St Nicholas School covers the Reception year
within the Foundation Stage, and Key Stages
1 and 2.

| Assessments at each stage |

At the end of the Foundation Stage, teachers
assess the progress and learning needs
of your child by using the Foundation
Stage Profile.
At the end of each key stage in Year 2,
(age 7) Year 6 (age 11) and 9 (age 14)
all pupils sit and take National Curriculum
tests and have formal teacher assessments.
These are often refered to as 'SATS' (School
Attainment Tests).
