About St Nicholas School

Games fields and play areas
There is a small games field adjacent to the school building and a much larger field a short distance away.
In this section:

Early Years Sports

The small games field

The small games field is an approximately triangular grassed area entirely within the school boundary. About fifty metres to a side, it is a good size for many early years activities. It includes a small long jump pit near the school boundary. The small field also includes the 'arboretum', a small set of different trees planted in 2000; the care of each tree is allocated to a different year group.
The small field is also used for the annual early years sports day, and sees extra use for the regular summer fete.

The main games field

The large field is located just across the footpath leading to the playground gate to the school. The field is sufficiently large for a grassed running track, allowing a wider range of sports and games.

Early Years Sports on the small field

The Playground

The main playground is a hard-surfaced playing area, used every day by children of all age groups. The year groups are separated to allow safe early years play.

The playground includes two play trails, each constructed to give a range of balancing and scrambling activities. The two trails are designed for the two main year groups, and are supervised during playtimes. The playground surface is marked for a range of games, including netball practice for the later years. The early years area includes a range of brightly marked counting games such as hopscotch and snakes and ladder markings.

The tree-shaded western end of the playground is a designated 'quiet area' and includes benches and tables where children can talk or read.

Early Years Play Area

A relatively recent addition, the early years play area is a fenced soft play area for Reception use. Equipped with slides and climbing apparatus, wheeled vehicles and 'road markings', it allows the Reception classes direct access to play (including essential role-play) equipment during and between class times.
